Adventure Based Learning

PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION:
Adventure Based Learning (ABL) programs offered through Boys & Girls Club Services of Greater Victoria foster important social skills and principles. Participants are organized into small cooperative communities with a focus on strengthening social bonds. This is achieved by exposing individuals to unfamiliar environments while engaging in group activities.

The ABL program offers activities ranging from half day to multi-week expeditions. Our 98 acre base camp in Metchosin (near Victoria, BC) has forest trails, small lakes, a challenge course, a 4-sided climbing tower, canoes and many other resources that allow the creation of custom designed curriculums and programs.

Adventure Based Learning (ABL) incorporates the following principles: the participant is actively engaged in the process, groups or small communities are created, unfamiliar activities or environments are presented, an imposed level of stress is applied to the group, and the activities are reflected upon and have some future relevance to the participants. These circumstances impel individuals into a state of readiness to learn and focus their attention on the task at hand.

ABL offers learning experiences in unique physical and social environments allowing individuals to experiment with new skills, behaviours and group roles in a safe, encouraging environment. Processing the experience through facilitated debriefing allows the experience to be internalized. Participants can then draw real life relevance from their learning.
