Pledge
To provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.
Our vision for Boys & Girls Club Services of Greater Victoria is
to join with families and other community members to provide services
to assist children, youth and families to develop the skills, attitudes,
supports and self-perceptions they need to achieve their potential.
Imagine a community where the children on your block know your name and
you know theirs. Where you can smile at them and ask them how they are
doing and they smile back and tell you! Where the schools are not considered
daycare centres and parents are not alone in their nurturing roles. Where
businesses treat young people with respect and help them develop values
and social competencies. Where workers in youth organizations and service
agencies are no longer overwhelmed by trying to do too much with too few
resources.
In short, imagine a community where all residents build caring relationships
with children and adolescents and express this caring through dialogue,
listening, commending positive behaviour, acknowledging their presence,
involving them in decision making and doing things with them. And then
imagine those children growing up to be caring, responsible citizens and
passing along their legacy of love and nurturing to the children in their
community.
Seem like an impossible dream? In hundreds of communities throughout North
America a paradigm shift is taking place. Communities are adopting a positive
vision and implementing initiatives to reclaim the responsibility for
raising youth - responsibility for providing the foundation, the building
blocks for life. These building blocks or "developmental assets"
are powerful shapers of young people's behaviour and Boys & Girls
Club Services of Greater Victoria was instrumental in introducing the
“Healthy Communities-Healthy Youth concept utilizing these developmental
assets to the Victoria community. Please go to the section on Developmental
Asset Building for more information on this concept.
Together we know we can create a healthy community for all.
