  Family Development

PROGRAM NAME: Family Development

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Family Development Program focuses on families where child protection and safety concerns have surfaced. Counsellors help parents and children deal with a wide range of issues from drug and alcohol use to physical or sexual abuse. We help parents develop effective parenting and communication skills that can build functioning, supportive, and caring family environments for adult and child alike.

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

Intervention is short term in nature (targeted at 1-4 months) and focused on assessment and reduction of risk to children, as well as the strengths and needs of individual families and referral to community-based services. Our three full-time Family Support Counsellors will each work with 6-8 families at a time.

In providing support to the mandated Ministry Social Workers, the program staff work in close partnership with the Ministry Social work team. Risk reduction for children is sought through a collaborative provision of service. Priority referrals are child protection situations and service delivery is child focused and family centred. A Support Services Agreement is reached collectively by family members, support program worker, and MCFD Social Worker.

REFERRAL PROCESS: Clients and referrals are identified by the Saanich Family Service Team (MCFD).
