  Parenting Without Power Struggles

PROGRAM NAME: Parenting Without Power Struggles

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Parenting Without Power Struggles (PWPS) is an education/support program for parents (of pre-teens age 10-13) who are curious about and/or feeling challenged by their pre-teen’s behaviour. This program is designed to provide an overview of how families are affected as our children change and develop from preteen to teen. PWPS offers support and understanding as parents strengthen their relationships with their families, giving parents a sense of confidence and preparedness for the upcoming adolescent years.

PROGRAM INFORMATION:
  • PWPS runs 3 programs per year and they meet weekly in the evening.
  • Programs are 10-12 weeks and parents are welcome to participate longer in PWPS until they feel satisfied their needs have been met.
  • Groups follow a structured meeting plan which includes discussing ideas and planning for change. The emphasis is on sharing, supporting and problem solving.
  • Parents are expected to respect the confidentiality of other participants.
  • The program manual may be purchased through the Boys & Girls Club Services of Greater Victoria at the beginning of the program sessions.

PARENTING WITHOUT POWER STRUGGLES IS DESIGNED TO:

  • Let parents know that they are not alone in the challenges they are experiencing with their pre-teens and that problem solving skill development will unfold at its own rate.
  • Provide an overview of how families are affected as their children move through the pre-teen to teen years.
  • Give parents an opportunity to look at their situation in a new way and to encourage follow through on plans for change.
  • Offer support and understanding as parents work towards strengthening relationships with family members without criticism or judgement.
  • Explore some of the following areas:
    • Communication and listening
    • Self-care for parents
    • Problem solving
