Nexus

PROGRAM NAME: Nexus

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Nexus is a day program, which incorporates a process oriented, asset development, youth centred model. Attendees are between the ages of 13-18 who are on probation. Community based projects and daily work experience on a farm in rural Metchosin is combined with life skills development and recreation to provide a safe, stable environment for participants to further develop healthy lifestyles and positive self-esteem.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Nexus Program is a life skills based program that incorporates internal and community based work projects, recreational activities and individualized educational components. The youth involved are expected to participate fully and follow basic social guidelines regarding boundaries and respect. The program provides a forum for youth to build social competency, self-efficacy and positive relationships.

The youth who attend Nexus struggle with their own sense of morals and feelings of injustice. While at Nexus they are held accountable for their actions and are educated towards positive values, feelings, and experiences. Youth are given an opportunity to exercise alternative choices.

The program consists of: life-skills, work ethic, food preparation, recreation, individualized school program, animal care, and social competencies, and content is dependent upon client needs and capacity for learning. Youth are encouraged to present their goals and needs to staff and receive support to attain them.

INTAKE & REFERRAL PROCESS:

Referrals to the Nexus program are completed through a probation officer. The staff team decide upon the suitability of the youth and a start date is determined. Program length is determined by the youth and the Nexus staff team.
